Spectrum PA12 CF15 1.75mm Filament – Lightweight and Strong for Industry
Spectrum PA12 CF15 is a material designed for the most demanding technical applications. It combines the properties of Polyamide 12 (Nylon) with the mechanical advantages of a 15% carbon fibre additive. The result is a filament that is not only exceptionally strong and stiff, but also lighter (by 10% compared to PA6 CF15) and more dimensionally stable.
Unlike other nylon filaments, PA12 has reduced moisture absorption, which significantly simplifies its storage and printing. Furthermore, the carbon fibres improve layer adhesion, minimise shrinkage, and provide prints with high Z-axis strength. This allows parts to resist deformation, even with complex geometries. This material is a reliable choice for engineering, where precision, durability, and resistance to external factors are key.
Recommendation: Due to the high carbon fibre content, the material is highly abrasive. A hardened steel or ruby nozzle is required for printing. A standard brass nozzle would wear out very quickly. A nozzle diameter greater than 0.4 mm (e.g., 0.5 mm or 0.6 mm) is also recommended to ensure smooth filament flow.
Features for Engineering Applications
Mechanical Performance and Low Weight
- High stiffness and strength: Reinforcement with 15% carbon fibres dramatically increases the elastic modulus and tensile strength (up to 125 MPa).
- Low weight: With a specific density of 1.07 g/cm³, it is 10% lighter than the comparable PA6 CF15 material, which is crucial for applications in aerospace or for drones.
- Chemical and abrasion resistance: PA12 is inherently resistant to oils, lubricants, and many chemicals.
Thermal Resistance and Dimensional Stability
- High heat resistance: Parts retain their mechanical properties up to a temperature of 170 °C.
- Low moisture absorption: Compared to standard PA6 or PA12, it absorbs less moisture, leading to more reliable printing and better properties in the final parts.
- Dimensional stability: The material has low shrinkage and minimal tendency to warp, which facilitates the printing of precise and complex components.
Recommended Applications
- Structural components in the automotive and aerospace industries.
- Production of lightweight and durable parts for drones and UAVs.
- Functional prototypes and end-use parts for engineering.
- Machine components requiring high mechanical resistance and low weight.
