Spectrum PC/PTFE 1.75mm Filament – A Technical Composite for Industrial Applications

Spectrum PC/PTFE combines two materials: polycarbonate (PC) and PTFE (Teflon). This composite was developed for applications requiring specific mechanical properties, primarily high abrasion resistance. Polycarbonate provides the material with mechanical resistance and rigidity, while PTFE adds a low coefficient of friction and wear resistance to the mixture.

Thanks to these modifications, printed parts gain improved thermal stability, enhanced electrical insulation, and higher resistance to chemicals and water. The prints can be machined to achieve a smooth surface, enabling the production of parts with complex geometries while maintaining dimensional accuracy.

Properties for Industrial Use

Wear Resistance and Low Friction

The material is suitable for parts that are in motion and contact.

  • Abrasion Resistance: The PTFE additive increases the parts' resistance to mechanical wear.
  • Low Coefficient of Friction: The static coefficient of friction is 0.18 and the dynamic is 0.14, ensuring smooth operation of sliding components.
  • Layer Adhesion: The prints have good adhesion between individual layers, which contributes to the overall strength of the parts.

Thermal and Mechanical Resistance

Parts made from PC/PTFE retain their properties even under demanding conditions.

  • Heat Resistance: The heat deflection temperature (HDT) reaches 140 °C, allowing parts to be used in higher temperature environments.
  • Mechanical Strength: The material retains the strength and rigidity of polycarbonate, a key property for producing functional and stressed components.
  • Self-Extinguishing: The material meets the UL 94 V1 flammability rating, which increases its safety for use in electronic and industrial equipment.

Printing Reliability and Precision

  • Low Shrinkage: The material exhibits low processing shrinkage (approximately 0.6%), which facilitates the printing of dimensionally accurate parts.
  • Electrical Insulator: With an electrical resistance of 1E12 Ohm, the material is an insulator, suitable for producing electronics housings and insulating elements.

Recommendation: To achieve the specified properties, printing in a heated print chamber is recommended. The material is hygroscopic, so it must be dried before printing and stored in a dry environment with humidity below 15%.

Recommended Applications

  • Production of low-friction parts: plain bearings, guide rails, gears.
  • Production of thermal and electrical insulating parts: housings, holders, and insulating elements for electronics.
  • Low-load transmission elements and gearbox components.
  • Assembly tools and fixtures for production lines.
  • End-use parts and functional prototyping.
