Increased Performance and Reliability with Glass-Reinforced ABS

Bambu Lab ABS-GF is a composite material that enhances the properties of one of the most widely used engineering plastics in 3D printing. By enriching the proven ABS material with glass fibres, a filament with increased mechanical resistance and print reliability has been created. This material was developed to address common problems associated with printing ABS, such as shrinkage and warping, while also offering significant improvements in key parameters.

The main benefit of the glass fibres is a significant increase in stiffness and strength, making ABS-GF an ideal material for load-bearing parts, mechanical housings, and components subjected to bending and stress. At the same time, dimensional stability and heat resistance are improved, allowing for the printing of larger and more precise parts that retain their properties even at higher operating temperatures. An aesthetic advantage is its fine matte surface, which effectively hides layer lines and gives prints a professional look.

Key Features

Mechanical Resistance

  • Increased Strength and Stiffness: Compared to regular ABS, it has up to 52% higher flexural modulus (stiffness) and 18% stronger layer adhesion. This makes it an excellent choice for parts that must withstand mechanical stress.
  • Wear Resistance: The enhanced durability is suitable for printing durable items such as mechanical housings or connectors.

Print Reliability and Stability

  • Excellent Dimensional Stability: The addition of glass fibres effectively reduces shrinkage and warping, which is crucial for successfully printing large models and precise assemblies.
  • Higher Heat Resistance: The Heat Deflection Temperature (HDT) reaches 99 °C, which is almost 14% higher than standard ABS. This allows parts to maintain their shape and strength even under higher thermal loads.

Aesthetics and Convenience

  • Fine Matte Surface: The filament produces prints with a smooth, matte finish that effectively hides individual layers and enhances the aesthetic value of the final parts.
  • AMS Integration: The spool is equipped with an RFID chip that allows the Automatic Material System (AMS) to read the optimal printing parameters, simplifying and speeding up print preparation.

Areas of Application

  • Functional prototypes and test parts
  • Load-bearing and mechanically stressed components
  • Enclosures and housings for electronics
  • Jigs and tools for the workshop
  • Decorative items with a professional look

Technical Specifications

Printing Recommendations

Warning: This material is abrasive. We strongly recommend using a hardened steel nozzle with a diameter of 0.4 mm or larger to prevent rapid wear.

  • Printer Requirements: An enclosed printing chamber is required to maintain a stable temperature and minimise warping.
  • Nozzle Temperature: 240–270 °C
  • Bed Temperature: 80–100 °C (glue recommended)
  • Print Bed Surface: Engineering Plate, High Temperature Plate, or Textured PEI Plate
  • Print Speed: < 180 mm/s
  • Filament Drying: It is recommended to dry the filament before printing (80 °C for 8 hours).
