Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W – New Generation of Performance in a Miniature Form Factor

The Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W represents a significant step forward compared to its predecessor, the Raspberry Pi Zero W. This miniature computer retains the same dimensions (65 x 30 mm) and connector layout, ensuring compatibility with most existing cases and accessories designed for the Raspberry Pi Zero. However, the main innovation is a dramatic increase in performance, opening doors to more demanding applications.

At the heart of the Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W is a quad-core 64-bit ARM Cortex-A53 processor (Broadcom BCM2710A1) clocked at 1 GHz, integrated along with 512MB LPDDR2 SDRAM into a single system-in-package (Raspberry Pi RP3A0). This configuration delivers approximately 40% higher single-threaded performance and up to five times higher multi-threaded performance compared to the original single-core Raspberry Pi Zero.

Connectivity and Interfaces

For wireless communication, the Zero 2 W is equipped with integrated 2.4GHz Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n) and Bluetooth 4.2 with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) support. The antenna is built-in, and the board has modular compliance certification.

You will find the following connectors on the board:

  • 1 × microSD card slot: For the operating system and data storage.
  • 1 × mini HDMI port: For video output.
  • 1 × micro USB data (OTG): For connecting peripherals (requires an adapter or HUB).
  • 1 × micro USB power: For powering the board.
  • 1 × CSI-2 camera connector: (Mini CSI port, requires a specific cable).
  • 1 × unpopulated 40-pin GPIO connector: Compatible with HATs (requires soldering a header).

Power and Software

Due to the more powerful processor, the Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W requires a stronger power supply; a 5V DC supply with a current of 2.5A is recommended. Thanks to the ARMv8 architecture, a wider range of operating systems can be installed, including some common Linux distributions. However, the 512 MB RAM remains a limitation, so "lite" distributions, such as Raspberry Pi OS, are an ideal choice. The OS is installed on a microSD card using the Raspberry Pi Imager tool.

Important Information for Users

  • LED indicator: The LED on the board signals processor activity. If it is not lit, it is likely necessary to reinstall the current operating system (e.g., the latest Raspberry Pi OS).

  • Required accessories: For full use, you will need a mini HDMI to HDMI adapter (or cable) and a micro USB to USB-A adapter (or micro USB HUB) to connect a keyboard, mouse, etc.

  • GPIO header: The 40-pin GPIO connector is supplied unpopulated. To use it with expansion modules (HATs), you need to purchase and solder a GPIO header.

Key Features
