Resistance temperature detectors (RTD) are very similar in operation to thermistors. However, instead of a semiconductor, they are made of metals, usually platinum, copper or nickel. The most commonly used types in 3D printers are the PT1000 and PT100. The PT1000 has the advantage over the PT100 that it can be directly connected to the 3D printer's motherboard. However, to achieve higher accuracy, a 4.7kΩ pullup resistor connection is also required here, which modern boards already have. Most of the firmware in use directly supports these sensors.
