Due to the different coefficients of linear thermal expansion of steel (rail) and aluminium (extrusion), the Voron V2 gantry forms a sort of giant bimetallic element of the temperature sensor. This causes the gantry to deform as it heats up with increasing temperature in the chamber.
When investigating the frame's behavior under expansion, several Voron users have noticed empirical values several times higher than we would expect, due to the linear expansion of the Z extrusions alone. Although plugging these empirical values into the compensation code provided great first layers, the difference from expectation was significant. Checking the table of temperature expansion coefficients, Whopping Pochard saw that aluminum actually expands quite a bit more with temperature than steel. This finding stood with the birth of Titanium Extrusion Backers.
