One of the key parts of the hotend is the heatsink. The role of the heatsink is to remove and dissipate heat from the hot part of the hotend so that the retracted filament is cooled immediately and to prevent it from melting or softening outside the melting zone.

The heat sink is essential for good hotend performance and for preventing printing problems. It is usually made of metal. Its overall surface area/ribbing but also the material together determine its quality.
